KUWAIT: Parliament Speaker Jassem AlÜKharafi announced on Wednesday that an emergency session will be convened on Sept. 10 to discuss the situation of expatriate workers in the country.
AlÜKharafi said he had received a request from a number of lawmakers to hold such a session and therefore measures will be arranged on Thursday to hold the extraordinary session. The speaker added that the government will be informed of the session and that invitations will be sent out to MPs.
Earlier in the day, at least 35 lawmakers presented a request for an emergency session to review the foreign workers'' strikes which took place a few weeks ago.
In their request, the lawmakers expressed fear that the strikes could be repeated, noting that the causes that led to the protests remained and that radical solutions were necessary. The 50Ümember Parliament is currently on its annual summer recess. The government has agreed to attend the emergency session.
